Papantonio: BP Leak Will Stop When Oil Well Runs Dry

Posted on July 07, 2010 by bp complaints

Will BP’s oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico ever stop? According to some experts, the answer to that question is “no,” and based on what we’ve seen from BP, they don’t seem to be getting any closer to stopping it either. Mike Papantonio appears on MSNBC’s Hardball to discuss the latest developments in the case, and we’ll find out why Ken Salazar is still letting BP call the shots.

With deep sadness in the wake of the tragic Deepwater Horizon oil spill, I pieced together this video montage to bid farewell to the Gulf of Mexico as it was. If the Gulf ever recovers from this, it will not be in my lifetime. I wish the rest of the world could know exactly what we’ve lost. This is HOME, this is my HEART, this is tragedy beyond comprehension or words. That is why there is no wording….the photos and video speak volumes themselves….may God bless us all.

  8. chainbluelightning1 says:

@Winter077 That’s even worse because they had to go miles below the ocean and then thousands of feet beneath the ground/seabed. Either one is perilous. I know we won’t get any answers about this, but if none of the current politicians even tries to get them they should all be impeached or voted out come November. That may mean the oilmen/Repubs have a shot of taking over again, but just get everyone you know to vote Green Party. And while even those guys are probably corrupt, they’re all we got.

  9. Winter077 says:

@chainbluelightning1 Crap, I misinterpreted the article, the 35,000 feet pertains to the actual depth of the ocean , not the well in the ocean floor, sorry. I don’t know how deep that well is and I don’t think we’ll ever find out. I agree with you 100%, they should be executed or imprisoned..I wouldn’t put it past them to continue drilling from the same well in the future.

  10. chainbluelightning1 says:

@Winter077 Amazing that when these oil people started this whole drilling process the word MAGMA didn’t put them off. Oh, let’s go as deep if not deeper than a molten substance that makes up the very core of our planet. To me, that kind of stuff should equal execution, or at the very least a decades long prison sentence. You can’t tell me that people playing around with magma-depths are worth anything to society.

  11. Winter077 says:

@chainbluelightning1 I don’t think any sane person would drill that deep nomatter how much money they could make. We realize that money would be worthless if we didn’t have a place to spend it.lol. I place the blame on evil, greedy people. I believe we are victims, regardless of our so called oil addiction.

  12. Winter077 says:

@chainbluelightning1 I found this tid bit in an article from “Sandia National Laboratories”. “In this third phase researchers hope to reach 11,500 feet — still a considerable distance from the top of the magma, which is believed to be somewhere between 18,000 to 26,000 feet.” So I guess magma has the potential to be 18,000 to 26,000 feet deep, compared to a depth of 35,000 feet for the BP well. That would mean the oil well is deeper than magma.

  13. Winter077 says:

@chainbluelightning1 “The discovery, called the Tiber well, is about 250 miles southeast of Houston at a depth of more than 35,000 feet — greater than the height of Mount Everest — and well below the gulf floor.” Published in The New York Times on Sept/2/2009.

Magma is generated within Earth’s mantle, the thick layer between Earth’s crust and outer core, I’m not sure how deep that is, though.

  14. Winter077 says:

@chainbluelightning1 “…BP declined to estimate the size of the new reserve, but a company executive said that it could be bigger than the three billion barrels of oil equivalent, combining oil and gas stocks, thought to be in the recently discovered Kaskida field nearby…” Published in The New York Times on Sept/2/2009.

  15. chainbluelightning1 says:

@Winter077 That’s for sure. I’m just wondering how much oil is in this particular “pocket”. Nobody seems to be saying, if they know. Is that because there’s a hundred or a thousand years of oil down there, or worse? Christ, next thing you know we’ll have magma coming up. Nobody can ever drill this deep again. Especially under water. We as a species should have our heads examined. Then again, every ship captain went fast in ice fields before Titanic smashed into one. Let’s just learn from this.

  16. Winter077 says:

@chainbluelightning1 Hundreds of years? It will kill us in 2 if it doesn’t stop..

  17. chainbluelightning1 says:

It should always be the final thing they try of course, and only after everything else conceived by human brains fails – smart, moral brains, not anyone associated with BP – but our President needs to have all the options on the table in case this oil pocket they hit ejaculates death into our seas for a hundred years. We can’t have that.

  18. chainbluelightning1 says:

Obama right now should be getting as much information as he can from scientists and oceanographers about the seafloor below the entire Gulf of Mexico. The whole enchilada: general geography, how deep the bedrock is across the region, other pockets of oil, undersea caverns, so that he can know with as much certainty as we humans can what ANY kind of explosive device will do. If a small non-nuke will stop this gusher from hell without splitting the seafloor open, he needs to know.

  23. manesh says:

Wait we’re listening to a lawyer for information? I thought they’d be interviewing a scientist. Lawyers are a bunch of soul-less creatures who professionally lie and manipulate in order to get themselves paid. The few lawyers who have any morals at all are the poor ones (not this guy).

  24. qimag1 says:

This is and will be the worst ecological crisis of the Century.
BP is working alone instead of bringing in the best scientists and engineers experts of the world.
If we do not unite now to select the best technology to close the leaks, we will destroy the Gulf, it´s coasts, and will contaminate all the Caribean, Mexico, Cuba and eventually Afrika and Europe.
We are not taking this problem with the right magnitude of the risk, threat and ecocide is generating now, and will deploy in following wk

you did a good job of showing a very sad situation too sad to say anything more
not about you, about the gulf, the world, humanity

  28. doglostflorida says:

When I pour bubble bath in the front of my tub, it always gets bubbles on my back. To think these chemicals being used will not flow else where does not seem logical. The news mentions neuclear bombs to stop the oil possibly being used is something people need to know prior to I pray.

  29. doglostflorida says:

Heartbreaking, you did a beautiful job on this video showing what has been or will be gone. My concern is all water is connected.

  30. luvyrpet says:

I am walking distance to the Gulf of Mexico and not only can I not watch this, but I can no longer go to the beach or walk to the waterway without getting upset. This is sickening!!!

  31. merrypeary says:

This saddens me so much….to the point of tears……what are the people we voted into office doing about it? Denise I live on the south east coast and can only imagine if it happened to the area I love. My heart goes out to the Gulf Coast people…….anmials…….Great Job on you did on the video Denise. Thank you for posting. You are an advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves.

  32. itsjenn8907 says:

    This hurts so bad.

  33. rixpixstix says:

This is so sad. You’ve made it known how devastating this oil spill is to our environment, our birds, our fish, our animals and to our way of life. May those who are responsible for letting this happen, and for those who are apathetic in their urgency to clean this up be judged by God Almighty Himself to bring wrath upon them!

  34. anneocraig says:

This is all so heartbreaking. Our beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Saturday, thousands around the world came out to make a stand for clean energy. We must, from this day forward, take hold of our lives, our oil addicted lives, and say enough….enough…
from the federal government to our own backyards…enough.

  35. anneocraig says:

@peachesandolivia I’m sorry, but if you don’t get it by now…God help this earth.

It’s just so sad, thank you for posting.

  39. peachesandolivia says:

It will never be the same, at least in our lifetimes. I’m not against deep water drilling, but perhaps it should be farther out in the ocean. I don’t know……….

You did a terrific job. This should be shown on the news. It is heartbreaking what is happening. This could have been contained, but instead it still spreads. So much for leadership. Thanks for the video. So very sad.

  48. gggg6030 says:

Such a moving video, thank you! I blame BP for the explosion, but I am furious at this administration’s unbelievably poor response to the clean up, and hold them responsible for this devastation! God Bless our neighbors in the Gulf!!

Beautifully done and so heart breaking!
