MEDIA ADVISORY: Teleconference to Provide Update on Subsurface Oil Monitoring Program

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Media are invited to view Shoreline Cleanup and Assessment Technique (SCAT) teams conducting operations Saturday at Orange Beach.

Federal-On-Scene Coordinator (FOSC), U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Paul Zukunft, will be available to answer questions.

The mission is part of the ongoing effort by the Unified Area Command to survey the shoreline affected by the Gulf oil spill and make cleanup recommendations and plans.

Media are invited to learn more about the SCAT teams and their role in the cleanup effort.

PASCAGOULA, Miss. – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ship Pisces departs Pascagoula, Friday, with a team of federal and academic scientists, on a mission to collect water and sediment samples focusing within 25 miles of the BP Deepwater Horizon wellhead.

The mission is part of the ongoing subsurface oil monitoring efforts being carried out by the Unified Area Command to track the fate of oil from the spill in the deep water of the Gulf. Media are invited to learn more about the Pisces, its capabilities and role in the monitoring effort during a dockside media availability and ship tour Friday.

U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Paul Zukunft, the federal on-scene coordinator, will also be providing an update on the overarching response operations.

WHAT: The R/V Ocean Veritas will depart Port Fourchon, La., to conduct near-shore, sub-surface monitoring operations off the coast of Louisiana.  This mission is part of the comprehensive subsurface oil monitoring effort being carried out by the Unified Area Command in the Gulf of Mexico as part of the ongoing response to the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.  Federal On Scene Coordinator Coast Guard Rear Adm. Paul Zukunft and senior members of the science team will be available to answer questions from credentialed media concerning the upcoming operations and the overall monitoring program. Availability to board the vessel is dependent on operations in preparation for departure.

WHAT: A pair of near-shore sub-surface monitoring demonstrations in Mississippi and Louisiana. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) are releasing a report today about dissolved oxygen levels in the Gulf of Mexico as a result of the Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill. Scientists from the report team will be available to discuss the recent findings and answer reporter questions.
