Rachel Maddow – America’s Sad Cycle Of Drilling and Spilling

Rachel Maddow on MSNBC gives an unbelievable account of the oil spills we’ve encountered. When will it all stop? When faced with oil disaster, drill more By The Rachel Maddow Show – Wed May 5, 2010 9:27 AM EDT The Deepwater Horizon disaster could send as much as 60000 barrels of oil a day straight into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This looming catastrophe led Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, whose state of Florida is threatened by the volcano of oil, to say Tuesday that he’s willing to filibuster an energy bill that expands off-shore drilling. Republicans, meanwhile, say they won’t vote for an energy bill that fails to include more drilling. From the Wall Street Journal: Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R., Ariz.) said legislation can’t move forward without three “pillars”: expanded oil and gas exploration, more nuclear power and a price on carbon-emissions in exchange for the first two. “At least temporarily, this has knocked one of the legs of the stool off to the side, so my guess is that nothing proceeds at the moment,” Mr. Kyl said. Mr. Nelson agreed, saying, “It makes it more difficult to get 60 votes,” the number to break a Senate filibuster. “You’re not going to get offshore drilling in an energy bill.” Some Democrats, like Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, share Sen. Kyl’s zeal for drilling. Landrieu’s state, of course, is also in the path of the Deepwater Horizon plume — making hers a kind of hair-of-the-dog cure for what ails you.

    Highly valuable to find such a comprehensive view on an extreemly important issue when most US media are owned by political spin -doctors and one sided whitewash.

    @JTlovesDexter
    Clinton had that rule in place…. Bush and Cheney took that rule away because it would cost the oil company a half-million dollars per well. An acoustic valve could have prevented this.

    america continually elects leaders who never ask the american people to sacrifice. if a politician calls for sacrifice (i.e. a tax increase) he/she is committing political suicide. the three things americans care most about their leaders: how good looking they are, how charismatic they are and them not calling for sacrifice.

    Something I don’t understand is WHY they don’t put in shut-off valves when they are constructing these wells??? It seems like common sense to me, since all of the plumbing in my home has several of these valves just in case my water pipes freeze and burst. Then I can shut if off at or near the point of the leak. It’s NOT rocket science……
