An underwater tour of the Gulf of Mexico by submarine and scuba, highlighting the vast diversity of marine life throughout the Gulf, from the surface to depths of nearly 2000 feet. The tour begins in the northern Gulf, tracks south along the west Florida shelf, to northwestern Cuba and finally west to Veracruz, Mexico. This video was produced for the opening ceremony of the first “State of the Gulf of Mexico Summit” held in 2006 in Corpus Christi, Texas. This video was also shown at the May 19, 2010 US House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, “Deepwater Horizon: Oil Spill Prevention and Response Measures, and Natural Resource Impacts” as part of the testimony of Dr. Sylvia A. This was incredibly beautiful, yet so tragic to know that BP, Haliburton and Transocean have changed this forever, for the worse. It can never be returned to pre-spill condition. We will come close, but it will never be the same. They need to pay for this in not just dollars, but in industry wide changes. BP has proven time and again, that failed safety inspections are to them, just a cost of business. They don’t care who or what they destroy in the process.

We need to go back with human occupied submarines now to see what has been damaged and for years to come, monitoring recovery, water quality, sampling sediments for oil and dispersants. How many of these areas are protected from trawling or other destructive fishing practices?
