Murkowski is a drilling supporter and has received more then $400,000 in campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry. In this speech, it’s easy to see where her loyalty lies!

From what I understand, this well was supposed to be capped for “future” use. There apparently was no immediate need for this oil, so it all boils down to greed. As far as mom & pop oil companies at risk with higher penalties, if they can afford to drill in the oceans, they’re NO mom & pop company.

  6. 1911arthur says:

If you dump 5 quarts of your cars oil after changing the oil, down a storm drain, you will get a heavy fine and jail time.
BP’s CEO, needs a 1 trillion dollar fine and needs to go to prison, life without parole, for this mess. All offshore drilling needs to be banned until the idiots know what they are doing. Heavy Federal Regulations need to go into effect, immediatley. This is a no brainer.

@stama9 yes they love to get you to think its the Republicans fault. The politicians REP and DEMS are PLAYING YOU! The lobbying firm of this “progressive” includes among its top clients the oil giant BP. Both DEMS and REPS are working together against the people.

  11. FairlyGushing says:

@EricJaffa The issue isn’t about “retro-active liability.” Existing law already holds BP liable; the issue is whether Congress can increase the amount which BP must pay. Since most of the damage hasn’t even begun yet, why shouldn’t Congress move quickly to ensure BP will be held responsible for damages occurring next week, or beyond?

But perhaps a better alternative would be for the POTUS to invoke eminent domain and relieve BP of ALL responsibility for their apparent negligence.

Like BP, both Transocean, which owned the rig, and Halliburton, who put together the drill pipes, wellheads and the blowout preventer, also pumped money into the campaign war chests of senators who sit on the Energy & Natural Resources Committee and the Environment & Public Works Committee.

Halliburton has given a total of $3.2 MILLION to federal candidates since 1990. Transocean and its pre-merger corporate predecessors – Sonat Offshore and Sedco Forex – have contributed $69,457.
